We have recently joined Petfinder.com. This is an awesome animal adoption site for rescued animals that are looking for homes all over North America. It's especially great if you are looking for a specific breed - contrary to what you may think there are many purebred animals in rescue.  Look for the NWASS under the search button GROUP NAME:  NorthWest Animal Shelter Society

300 million Facebookers means a lot of social networking potential for any charity. Join the 304 and counting members of our Facebook page and get regular updates. www.facebook.com

We welcome all donations of dry dog and cat food, litter, treats, collars, leashes, pet bed, toys, blankets, kennels etc. All donations are shared among our network of rescuers to help them cut down their own personal costs, which (with multiple animals to feed) can be significant. In Smithers, donations can be dropped off at Smithers Feed or at any of our public events. If you would like to make a private donation, please e-mail smithersnwass@hotmail.com with the details and we will be in touch within two days.

The North West Animal Shelter Society is a a non-profit volunteer organization based in Smithers, BC. Smithers is approx. a four hour drive west of Prince George, BC.

We have no physical location. There is no animal shelter in the Bulkley Valley.

We are actively working to fundraise in order to build a shelter in the area. In the meantime we also provide several other important services to the community:

Rescuing as many abandoned and orphaned cats and dogs as we are able.

Work with the Town of Smithers bylaw officer to post photos and descriptions of impounded dogs here on our website.

Supporting several individuals who are involved in animal rescue with spay and neuter services,  postings on our website and appeals for food, foster homes etc.

Spay and Neuter Assistance Program:  We work with Babine Pet Hospital and BV Vet Clinic to provide financial help to individuals and families who cannot afford the full cost to spay or neuter their own pets.

Coordinating a small foster program:  If you are interested in fostering, please contact us at smithersnwass@hotmail.com. We are always looking for homes.

Spay and Neuter education through our posters, advertising, website and quarterly newsletter to our membership.

Daily e-mail contact with the public

Humane animal education & visits to local schools.

Pet and health care counseling; training referrals

Complimentary lost and found postings on our website.

We do our best to match the temperament and personality of the animals with individual and family needs.  The 'suitability' factor is an important part of a successful animal/human match and helps to prevent animals going to the wrong homes.

Provide free feral mousers to responsible farmers who request them.

We receive no government funding. All our services are based on our fundraising efforts.

We provide a valuable community service and rely strictly on donations. We need your help!

We urgently need to build a shelter, to give the animals a greater chance of finding a permanent family in a shorter timeframe.  We give a deserved second chance to as many animals as we can. We believe that NO animal should have to endure neglect or abuse. Our  mission is to advocate for animal welfare, seeking to end the needless deaths of companion animals through our adoption, education, and outreach programs.
